Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply for a position at LAIKA?

To apply for a position on the LAIKA career page, please click on the link. You will be instructed on how to apply. Allowable resume formats include: PDF (.pdf), MS Word (.doc), Plain Text (.txt), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and/or HTML (.htm/.html). Please include your portfolio URL in the first line of your resume. Any additional details you may need regarding the submission of reels and/or portfolios will be provided. For PDF files, please be sure the PDF is text-based vs. character-based in order to ensure your resume is uploaded to your profile.

Can I apply by just sending in my resume?

Due to the volume of requests, we only review applicants that have registered with us in our OpenHire applicant tracking system. We request that you take the time to create an online profile at laikacareers.silkroad.com. Creating an online profile allows you to upload your resume and cover letter, attach links to your online reel or portfolio work, and sign our demo submission agreement, which is a requirement in order for LAIKA to review any submitted visual materials. This also ensures we have your information on file, creating maximum exposure of your materials to all hiring managers at LAIKA. While visiting our career center explore the job possibilities and learn more about the exciting things happening here at LAIKA.

To whom can I address my resume or cover letter?

Resumes are not accepted via email or US mail, only through OpenHire. If you choose to create a cover letter (not required), please address it to Recruiting. LAIKA has a team of recruiters and hiring managers that work together to source and screen our applicants. Please include your portfolio URL in the first line of your resume.

What should I do if the job I’m looking for is not listed?

If you do not see the exact position that you are interested in, you can use our job agent feature. Creating a job agent is an optional feature designed for those who haven’t found exactly what they are looking for. It allows people to search for and identify skill-based matches even if the exact job they were hoping to find wasn’t listed in a way they could easily identify. This feature can help candidates stay up to date with LAIKA’s hiring needs and identify new jobs as they become available. If you would like to use this handy feature, please go to our career page and click on create an agent. This will open up a user-friendly tool that will guide you through a relatively quick process.

Are there any special steps when applying from outside of the United States?

We encourage anyone interested in career opportunities at LAIKA to familiarize themselves with the required qualifications for the various visas (O-1, TN, H-1B, etc.). If you meet those qualifications, apply directly to our site for any positions that you may be interested in.

For more information regarding work visas, please visit: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.

Be mindful that if you do not meet these qualifications, your international application cannot be considered. Please take the time to review this information before applying as it will impact your ability to work anywhere in the United States.

What should I do if I am new to the industry and do not have any professional references yet?

It is definitely acceptable to apply even though you haven’t acquired three professional references.

We would encourage you, however, to consider asking a professor or respected classmate who is familiar with your schoolwork if they would be willing to act as your reference. Another option is to include a co-worker or supervisor who worked with you in a different occupation. These references can speak to your overall work ethic and performance standards. LAIKA typically conducts references by phone; when listing your three professional references, please be sure to include their phone numbers.

When lacking professional references, it is even more important to showcase your abilities. It is recommended that you include additional portfolio work to showcase your abilities. Please consider supplementing your online profile with either PDF attachments or a link to your recent portfolio work. This will create maximum exposure of your materials to all hiring managers at LAIKA as openings occur.

Do I need to send in a demo reel with my application?

Yes. Due to the volume of materials we receive, we must restrict our recruitment process to only those applicants that have provided us with enough information to make an informed decision. Only applications with relevant work samples, portfolios, and/or reels will be considered. Please include your portfolio URL in the first line of your resume.

We prefer, however, that you connect all of your materials to your online profile. This allows all of our hiring managers to efficiently view your materials. Please submit your work as either an online link or as a small PDF attachment.

If you choose to send your demo reel or portfolio via post, the address is: 22990 NW Bennett St., Hillsboro, OR 97124 - Attention: Recruiting. Please be aware that we are unable to return any materials sent to us.

Do I need to send you a Materials Submission Agreement if I applied online?

There is no need to attach a copy of this agreement to your online application or to mail us a hard copy.

When you first set up your online profile, you authorized approval of the agreement by clicking “OK,” which grants us permission to view your materials. While less formal, this is sufficient to allow us to view your online portfolio work.

We only require the materials submission agreement when individuals send us a physical portfolio through the mail. We, however, prefer that you provide us a link or connect your materials as separate attachments to your online profile. This allows all of our hiring managers to easily view your materials.

Why am I having trouble logging into my profile?

Some applicants experience problems logging into their profile because the system is case sensitive; for example, if someone sets up their email address with any uppercase letters they will need to do the same to log in. We recommend that you keep a record of your log-in information for future use. If you lose your password, LAIKA representatives do not have access to your information and you must contact Applicant Support to request assistance: (866) 927-2472.

Why is it that when I click on the "Create a Profile" link that I remain on the career home page?

This error can occur whenever pop-ups are blocked. Please enable your pop-ups and then clear your privacy preferences: clear your recent search history, cookies, cache, and offline website data. In most systems you will then be required to shut down temporarily in order for these changes to take effect. For additional guidance please contact Applicant Support (866) 927-2472.

I am having difficulties removing my old resume from my profile. Should I just withdraw my application and start over?

Please do not withdraw your application when switching out your resume. This will remove you from any of our active searches, and will prevent any future notifications. In fact it is typically not necessary to remove older information from a profile. Please just update your profile with a new attachment. The newer information will simply appear first in your application when reviewed by our recruiters.

Why won't my PDF cover letter attach to my profile?

Please be aware that while our system has been designed to provide neutral service, some browsers and systems perform less optimally during the application process. Additionally it has come to our attention that there is a known issue with all versions of Firefox for Windows and how it interacts with Flash based file uploaders. Applicants utilizing Firefox browser on Windows OS or anyone else who can't select their PDF document should look to upload their cover letters and other materials in non-PDF file extensions (.txt, .rtf, .doc, .docx, .html), or switch to one of the supported browsers below.

Browser Version
Apple Safari 6.0.5 on Mac
Google Chrome 29
Mozilla Firefox 23
Windows Internet Explorer 7-9, 10 (Win7)

*Other versions have known issues when rendering the application.

What should I do if I experience any other technical difficulties with my online application?

The fastest way to resolve any kind of profile error is to simply call Applicant Support (866) 927-2472 during business hours so that they are able to walk you through the process. Please be aware that our system is not fully iPad compatible, and when uploading a resume or another attachment, the file name needs to have fewer than fifteen characters without excessive punctuation for it to upload correctly. Also, there is a 45-minute time limit to complete the application or it will error out. People with Macs sometimes experience difficulties uploading documents as they can retain additional HTML coding that overloads the fields. This can be remedied by clearing the privacy preferences: clear recent search history, cookies, cache, and offline website data. In most systems you will then be required to shut down temporarily in order for these changes to take effect. If you require additional guidance or experience any other technical difficulties, please contact Applicant Support (866) 927-2472.

Do you have any helpful hints for when I create my online profile?

When creating your profile please be sure to include the phone numbers for your professional contacts and the links and/or attachments of your portfolio work. This will create maximum exposure of your materials to all of the hiring managers as the openings occur. If you have a large amount of portfolio work, please consider providing us a link to a website. Our system was not designed to handle very large files.

As your skills and experience continue to grow, please continue to update your profile on the LAIKA career center; include any visual materials or links that highlight your abilities. If you experience technical difficulties while updating your profile, please contact Applicant Support (866) 927-2472.

How do I know if a position has been closed or if I am no longer in consideration?

A member from our Recruiting department will only contact you if it is determined your skills and experience match the position. LAIKA, however, pulls all job listings off of the LAIKA Career Opportunity page once a decision has become finalized.

Do you hire for staff positions, or are they project-based?

LAIKA generally offers two types of employment opportunities for interested candidates.

Project staff and freelance jobs are temporary positions that do not include benefits, and are designed to fill short-term business needs of less than one year.

Regular staff positions, that include the provision of benefits, are openings that the studio is forecasting a business need for – for over one year.

Please check our job openings to orient yourself with the current positions available and how they might fit your particular skills and career interests.

I will be visiting Portland. Could I get a tour or meet with a recruiter while in town?

We are not able to accommodate individual tours of the studio, and, unfortunately, we are unable to meet with every applicant. If it is determined your skills and experience match a position, you will be contacted by our Recruiting department.

I’d like to ask one of your artists or recruiters for some advice on getting started. Could you put me in touch with someone so that I can ask them some questions?

Due to the volume of requests we are simply unable to offer informational interviews or career advice on demand. A member from our Recruiting department will contact you if it is determined your skills and experience match a position.

Please understand that we are unable to release any employee’s personal contact information. Instead, we suggest you utilize career centers and/or professors at your school or schools you’re interested in attending.

Where would I get the training necessary to work as an artist at LAIKA?

There are many schools with programs in art and/or technology that can provide a student with a strong educational foundation. LAIKA employees come from a variety of different schools and programs, including but not limited to:

  • Gnomon School of Visual Effects
  • Ringling College of Art and Design
  • Rhode Island School of Design
  • Carnegie Mellon University
  • Sheridan College
  • Savannah College of Art and Design
  • CalArts

My high school requires me to participate in a job shadow program and I would like to spend the day at LAIKA. Would you let me shadow one of your artists or work for free just for the experience?

Our production schedule prevents us from participating in job shadow programs. Once you enter college, you may qualify for our internship program. To ensure that our interns have a successful experience, we only accept summer intern applications for college students who have minimally completed their sophomore year. College graduates may qualify for trainee positions.

Furthermore LAIKA offers paid internships at an entry-level hourly rate as all of our interns will be expected to perform productive work of an immediate benefit to the company during their training. Thank you for understanding that we are limited in our ability to provide additional career-related learning opportunities.

What kind of entry-level opportunities do you offer?

LAIKA offers internships and trainee positions in a variety of production areas. We keep an open pool of candidates for being a runner, an entry-level position that assists with a variety of administrative duties for a production. If you do not see the exact position that you are interested in, you can still place your resume for consideration for future openings by clicking on the link under the Need Assistance? heading. When creating your profile please be sure to include phone numbers for your professional contacts, and links and/or attachments of your portfolio work.

Another option would be to use our job agent feature.

What kind of benefits do you offer?

LAIKA offers a competitive benefits package. Regular staff benefits include:

  • Medical/Dental/Prescription Coverage
  • Paid Time Off
  • Base Life Insurance
  • Long-term Disability
  • 401(k) Match Plan (eligibility begins following one year of service)

Do you offer relocation assistance?

LAIKA offers relocation assistance for some positions. The benefit amount varies depending on the type of position, department budgets, and production schedules.

I have my own company. How do I set up a company profile?

Due to the volume of requests and our standardized hiring practices, we must limit ourselves to screening only individual applicants, not companies, that have registered with us in our OpenHire applicant tracking system.

I am a musician. How do I submit my music for consideration?

LAIKA does not accept unsolicited material.

The timeline for filling our internships is completely dependent on the quality of applicants applying and the amount of competition for each position. Thus, intern positions are open until filled, unless a deadline for applying appears on the posting.

Can I apply to your internships if I am not in college?

Unfortunately not. We only accept junior- or senior-level college students that have already shown exceptional promise within their specialty. Many of our finalists are award-winning artists from leading art institutions across the country. All of LAIKA’s employees, including our interns, need to perform at or above a certain skill level; this requirement has been established to give them every chance of success, as foundational knowledge necessary to perform their roles will be expected.

Do you accept international internship applications?

Unfortunately we do not offer international internship opportunities. We are at the beginning stages of developing our internship program and have not yet established the formal parameters that are necessary when providing academic credit to our participants or the structured training process that is required in legally obtaining a J-1 visa.

We encourage international candidates interested in employment opportunities at LAIKA to familiarize themselves with the qualifications required for the various visas (O-1, TN, H-1B, etc.) and to investigate whether or not you meet those legal requirements. For more information regarding work visas, please visit: http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis.
